The problem

Most name ideas are already taken.

You find one you love, then discover the .com is gone, the GitHub org is squatted and the npm package exists. Hours lost, every time. So we only show you names that are still free.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Where do the names in the catalogue come from?
We find them with our naming engine, check that the .com or other extension is unregistered, and review every one by hand before it's listed. Names that get registered by someone else disappear automatically.
Is CheckedName free?
Yes. Exploring the catalogue, searching and generating names are all free. When you register a domain, you pay Namecheap directly. We may earn a commission from them at no extra cost to you.
Do you sell domains too?
Some listings are premium domains we already own. They're clearly labelled “Premium domain for sale” with a fixed price or an enquiry option, so they're never confused with names you can register yourself.
How do you check whether a domain is available?
We query the registries directly over RDAP (the modern replacement for WHOIS), confirm with DNS, cache results for a few minutes and always show when each check happened.
Is “available” a guarantee?
No. Availability can change at any second, and some names are reserved or premium-priced by registries. We say “Available when checked” and show the time, never “guaranteed”.
Why does an extension say “Unable to verify”?
A few registries don't offer a public lookup we can rely on. When we can't be sure, we say so instead of guessing. We never present an unknown result as available.
Do I need an account?
No. You can explore and run searches as a guest. A free account gets you more searches per day, saved names and search history.

Stop checking names by hand.

Your next name is probably already in the catalogue, and it's free to look.
